Defences

©Carmen Waterman
As the end of this week with the colourful and fresh Rainbow Travellers Tarot (2012) approaches, we meet a very confident-looking woman in the Nine of Wands.

This lady looks like she knows her defences, both material and spiritual, are solid.  Not only does she have strong stone at her back, she also has a little altar to represent what she has faith in.  She holds a flaming wand, and looks forward and up, willing to face all comers.

I see her saying that it's time to face any challenges with bravery and with confidence.  Time to take on our fears, and shine a light on them!

I've been feeling a bit defensive again, and have been trying to talk myself through it to accept that if someone has a problem with me, it's their problem.  Easier said than done, though, as that's often just a mental exercise - I don't actually feel it.  So, I've also been meditating everyday on loving kindness - on sending loving thoughts to those who seem to attack me.  That seems to really help :)

I am grateful for loving kindness.

  1. I drew the nine of wands today too! The feeling I got from mine was a bit more pensive, though. I like the confidence of this one. I've also been concentrating on sending loving thoughts to people whose actions and words have me feeling defensive lately.

    1. Nice synchronicity, Siddaleah. Both with the cards and the loving thoughts. Really does seem to help :)

  2. I am so grateful that you have been sharing your readings with the Rainbow Travellers deck. I know how hard it is to not feel defensive, hurt and lacking when others seem to need to point out my mistakes or things they don't agree with, including a lack of understanding or acceptance. I believe I have made the most progress with this challenge with loving kindness and compassion. Often easier said than done however I am gaining ground in knowing that being authentic and following what calls me is more important to me than fitting in. So like this card I draw courage from the fact that it is better to be true to myself than to conform to what others would want me to be. I'd like to share an affirmation for the Nine of Wands from the amazing book Around the Tarot in 78 Days by Katz and Goodwin: "Affirmation: I can take heart from any oppositions for it tells me I am moving forward." I thought this quote spoke so much to what both of you are feeling. I really think it is a sign that we are growing and standing up for who we are and what we believe in.

Brightest Blessings of loving support, gratitude and hope
    Carmen

  4. This is a very confident image of the Nine Wands, it definitely speaks of that inner confidence and self assurance. Sometimes with the RW image I also see the need to know when it's time to give it up and beat a retreat, but not in this image. The figure does look like she means business, I can almost here her say - "hey this is my place, if you don't like it you know what you can do!" LOL

Wands being the suit of fire and linked to creativity, inspiration and the nine being the wrap it up stage in tarot, this card does seem to say to me, okay I am where I am because of the actions I have taken, now what are the loose ends I need to tie up before I can move on.

As for being defensive, all I can say, is that you are only responsible for how you act/react not for how the other person does, so if they have a problem, just smile and wave em goodbye. ^_^

    1. Hi Helen,

You are of course right - we can only work on how we respond, not on how the other does. I didn't quite smile and wave, but I did put on a braver face, and show more of my true self :)

I also especially liked your take on looking at what loose ends need tying up. Not sure it's quite where I'm at, but it's a great perspective on the Nine of Wands more generally!

  5. Hugs!

Sounds like you've had a rather challenging mercury retro. I hope, in the end, everything comes out the way it should and you get even more satisfaction in everything once the chaos is sorted.

    Hopeful hugs,
    MM
